ISS will be submerged into the ocean!
Russia and its partners plan to crash into the ocean the International Space Station (ISS) at the end of its life, after 2020, so as not to leave on orbit dangerous space garbage , especially because the remnants of this kind have already become a thorny problem.
Last month, a piece of space garbage passed almost tangential on ISS in a rare incident, but forced the six members of the station crew to take refuge in the rescue ship.
"After ending its existence, we will be forced to sink ISS. Can not be left in orbit, is an object too complex and too heavy, which can leave behind more trouble, "said Vitaly Davydov, deputy director of Roskosmos space agency.
International Space Station, orbiting Earth at an altitude of 350 kilometers, is a platform for sophisticated scientific experiments, altogether bringing efforts of space agencies of United States, Russia, , Europe, Japan and Canada.
Launched in 1998, ISS was initially to stay in space for 15 years until a new agreement set it to operate until 2020. Ending in a water-coffin, the station will tread in the footsteps of its predecessor, Mir Space Station, which Russia has sunk it in the Pacific in 2001 after 15 years.
Davydov says that he remains uncertain, for what will come after ISS and whether mankind will need a replacement to orbit the Earth in close range. Adding a new space station could be used for assembly of a complex base to explore the area further, is the official opinion of Roskosmos.
