Researchers on the James Clark Ross ship discovered the danger that could melt in an instant entire Antarctica. Is about active volcanoes chains, around the South Sandwich Islands, in depths of Atlantic Ocean.
Volcanoes are located near the coast of Antarctica, and in case of eruptions and some tsunamis, the entire habitat area would be in real danger.
Using mapping technology during the research on James Clark Ross vessel scientists have found 12 underwater volcanoes. Some had up to 3,000 meters.
Researchers have discovered craters with a diameter of 5 km, occurred after the collapse of volcanoes, and 7 active volcanoes, visible above the water, forming a chain of islands. Research is important for understanding what happens when volcanoes erupt or collapse under water and their potential to create hazards by tsunami waves.
"There are so many things we still do not understand about underwater volcanoes. Technologies that scientists can now use them at sea not only enable us to put together information that shows how the Earth evolved but give us the chance to learn more about potentially dangerous natural phenomena for those living in the most populated areas of the planet", said Dr. Phil Leath on Antarctic Earth Sciences International Symposium, held in Edinburgh.
