Swiss Alps Railways with Google Street

Google's fleet of Street View cars, trikes and snowmobiles have explored some interesting places over the years, including the Amazon river, the  ruins of Pompeii and the  Whistler mountain range in Canada. Now, the team has hit the train tracks.

The global mapping giant  teamed up with Rhaetian Railway to put a Street View trike on a train car and push it through the picturesque Albula-Bernina line in the Swiss Alps, between snow-capped mountains and narrow valleys.

The famous train line, which runs from Chur in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy, climbs almost 2,000 meters in altitude as it weaves through a network of tunnels, viaducts and galleries. It's one of the world's most popular rail journeys and was declared a World Heritage Site in 2008.

To capture it in all its splendour, Google's three-wheel pedicab was mounted onto a flatbed at the very front of a train. Cameras facing in nine different directions took still photos of the surrounding area which the team back at base will now stitch into 360-degree  panoramic shots.
You'll able to see the images yourself, and follow the Albula-Bernina line vicariously through Google Street View, "soon".
