Minaret of Jam – The Lost Architecture

Built back in 1190s, located in western Afghanistan, the 65 meter high Minaret of Jam is the second largest religious monument of its kind in the world. The minaret is hidden in mountains that reach a height  up to 2400 meters and is famous for its artwork that includes calligraphy, geometric patterns and beautifully written verses of Holy Qur’an.

The minaret is famous for playing hide-and-seek, as for centuries it remained forgotten until rediscovered in 1886 by Thomas Holdich. It didn’t come to the attention of the world before Soviet war started and this beautiful architecture was cut off for outside access. The minaret got back the attention in year 2002 when it was included in the UNESCO’s list of world heritage in danger.
