For those of you who are not particularly scientifically minded this article sets out to explain the basics of solar power generation and how solar power can be used.
The powerful rays emitted by the sun contain photons. When these photons hit the silicon solar panels, they free the electrons which are nestling in there causing them to produce an electric charge which can then be used very much like normal electricity that comes through power lines.
In fact it is possible to incorporate the electricity so generated into your normal supply or keep it as a separate independent source of power. The electricity may be stored by charging solar batteries and – believe it or not – in some places the national grid will buy back any solar power you have in excess, not a bad option!
You can use solar power to heat water and it has been known for people to heat their swimming pools this way though that may not be a very economic option.
Solar power is clean and relatively inexpensive and as the technology develops its advantages over traditional methods of power generation, like burning fossil fuels, multiply. It is also unbeatable in inaccessible areas where the laying of power lines may be totally impractical – and what better way to provide electricity to a spaceship?
